Shinseki will receive
patriotism recognition

The National Japanese American Memorial Foundation will honor three leaders at an inaugural gala Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

The three honorees are recently retired Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki, retired Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole and U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.

Shinseki, a Kauai native, will receive the Award for Patriotism, which recognizes an individual whose military or other contributions to the nation's peace, security and welfare exemplify the spirit of patriotism in the face of prejudice.

Mineta will be honored with the Award for Constitutional Rights, which is bestowed upon someone whose contributions to constitutional rights have improved treatment of and opportunities made available to all Americans, advancing diversity and unity.

Former Sen. Dole will be given the Chairman's Award, which goes to someone whose leadership has raised the nation's awareness of the Japanese-American community's contributions to this country's history and life.

Three days of events will lead up to the gala, which will be held across the street from the National Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism during World War II.
