Wave Waikiki hosts
turntable competition

TURNTABLES are the weapon of choice tonight at the Wave Waikiki when this year's South Pacific Regional International Turntablist Federation Championships kick off at 9 p.m.

Promoters are still kind of sketchy as to exactly who will compete for a shot at moving on to the U.S. championships, but Nocturnal Sound Krew members DJ Solution and DJ Costik have been confirmed to participate. Last year's ITF regional champion, DJ Skid, decided not to defend his title in order to better prepare for next year's competition. He'll get on the decks tonight as a special guest deejay instead.

DJs Bennie James, D-MOFO-D and Positive Regime are also supposed to be in the building tonight, but no word if they plan on stepping up to show their turntable skills or if they'll just be there to help keep things moving. Five bucks gets you in if you're over 21, otherwise it'll be $12. Call 686-3494 ...

OVER AT Pipeline Cafe, reggae is the format of choice tonight during "Irie," starting at 9 p.m.

Skank on over to the Kakaako nightclub for an evening of roots music with Ooklah the Moc, Inoa'ole and Hot Rain. DJ Big Bar, of KTUH fame, will also be on hand to provide the night's soundtrack between performers. Party people 18 and over are welcome at this one; call 589-1999 ...

THE ALOHA FESTIVALS continue tomorrow night in Waikiki with the annual Waikiki Ho'olaule'a along Kalakaua Avenue.

Hula performances dominate a few more stages here than they did at the Downtown Ho'olaule'a last week, and island music fans will be forced to make a decision when picking a entertainment stage -- for some reason, organizers have the Ka'ala Boys, Keahiwai and Ho'onu'a all performing at the same time during the 8 p.m. hour on different stages.

To get the most bang for your buck, check out the KCCN FM-100 stage at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki or the Island 98.5 stage fronting the Aston Waikiki Beach. Other groups performing tomorrow on those stages include Three Plus, Sudden Rush, Kapena and Natural Vibrations. Check out www.alohafestivals.com for a complete listing of entertainment ...

SKA FANS will rejoice this weekend as the legendary one-man ska band Chris Murray returns to Honolulu for a series of concerts. Go Jimmy Go fans might remember that the band performed with him while on tour in California back in 2001.

Murray plays tonight at Kemoo Farms' Lakeside Lanai, tomorrow at UH-Manoa, Saturday at Coffee Talk and Anna Bannanas, and Monday at Kapiolani Community College ...
