Jack in and make
the connection

I'VE never been a believer of brainwaves traveling through space, but the concept was sorely tested the other day. I received an e-mail from a newspaper writer who was a big fan of writer Jack Douglas ("My Brother Was an Only Child," "Never Trust a Naked Bus Driver" etc.,) and came across my column while doing a Google search on the Internet. I'd written about having lunch with Jack's widow, Reiko Douglas, six years ago and he was wondering if I'd kept in touch. Before I could answer in the negative, my phone rang and there was Reiko! I nearly freaked out. I told her about the fan of her late husband's and she said to send him her e-mail address, which I did. The two have now established communications, and my mind is open to seemingly random events having a connection ... Incidentally, old fans of the Jack Paar late night TV show may well remember Jack and Reiko and their numerous appearances there ...

SOME people assume that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico''s Independence Day, but it's merely a celebration of a victory over France in 1862. The real Independence Day is Sept. 16, and this week it was celebrated in Pac Bell Park when S.F. Mayor Willie Brown declared it "Ric Enos Day in San Francisco." Enos, owner and founder of Compadres, was singled out by Mayor Brown for his leadership of the Giants Community Fund Board as he retired as chairman. The Fund has given away more than $1 million in grants to non-profit organizations ...

THOSE attending the Hawaii Theatre's "Caper" fund-raiser at Neiman Marcus on Oct. 4 will have a San Francisco package that'll be up for bids in a silent auction. The package includes admission to the much-heralded American Conservatory Theatre, as well as two nights at the Serrano Hotel arranged by former Isle resident Mary Ann Holt, who's affiliated with the Kimpton boutque hotel chain in the City by the Bay. The package also includes admission to the sold-out Asian Art Museum along with a private tour and lunch. Who could have arranged that package? Why, Indru Watumull, of course. So if you're in the mood for a "Caper" in San Francisco -- and who isn't? -- call Elaine Evans at 791-1302 for tickets ...

I'VE often said that attorney Rick Fried is the one person I know who doesn't mind getting older, because the competitive tennis player gets to enter into a new bracket and face older players, leaving the younger, more athletically inclined behind him. Alas, when he turned 60 and had visions of codgers collecting Social Security across the net, reality set in. Fried was informed in no uncertain terms that he'd be destined to playing those in their 50s in the immediate future ...

Queenly collection

SATURDAY'S "200 Years of Hawaii Monarchy Collection Fashion Show" at Kahala Mall won't just have beautiful fashions of the era, but beautiful models to show them off. Wearing the gowns will be runway model Taramati Chanel Thompson, former Miss Hawaii Jennifer Hera, former Miss Oahu Jonell Kalaae Saragosa, former Mrs. Hawaii Pohai Au and former Miss Hawaii World Leialoha Ho'ohuli ...
