[ TURNING POINT ]
Trojans take a chance and turn it into a rout
Southern California made enough big plays yesterday for a season's worth of highlight film in its 61-32 victory over Hawaii.
But perhaps the biggest offensive play for the Trojans won't make the cut when it comes to the spectacular.
A rather mundane 3-yard pass by Matt Leinart to backup fullback David Kirtman came at a key juncture for USC.
The Trojans -- who hadn't scored an offensive touchdown yet -- went for it on fourth-and-2 at the UH 26, leading 10-6 with a little more than five minutes left in the first half.
Kirtman got the first down, and on the next play Hershel Dennis went 23 yards for the first of his two touchdowns, and USC led 17-6.
"That play was very important to us," USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow said of going for it rather than kicking a field goal. "Sometimes you have to do something like that to keep things off balance."
[ COMING UP ]
Hawaii has short week to forget blowout loss
Hawaii left after yesterday's embarrassment for five days in Ontario, Calif., where the Warriors will lick their wounds and try to find a way to lick the Rebels of Nevada-Las Vegas.
The difficulty of that task will depend a lot on the emotional state of the two teams come Friday night at Las Vegas. While Hawaii (1-1) needs to rise up from a low, UNLV (2-1) needs to stabilize after a high.
Before the Warriors were pounded by Southern California yesterday, the Rebels upset No. 14 Wisconsin 23-5, at Madison.
Hawaii leads the series with UNLV 10-5, but the Rebels won the last meeting 34-32 at Aloha Stadium to end UH's 2000 season.
