Isle players
starting strong

Two weeks into the college soccer season several Hawaii players with mainland teams are off to good starts.

Alisa Sato, a senior striker from Iolani, and Maile Tavepholjalern, a sophomore midfielder from Punahou, were starters for Harvard when the Crimson defeated Vermont 3-1 in its opener. On the first goal, Tavepholjalern made a great move to free herself from a Catamount defender and found Sato, who then passed to Alisha Moran for a header into the back of the net.

Adria Campbell, a freshman striker from Punahou, needed just 3:45 to score her first collegiate goal and the first of the season for the Southern University Lady Mustangs who crushed Sam Houston State, a first-year program, 10-1.

Campbell also assisted on SMU's only goal in a 3-1 loss to 6th ranked Texas A&M in the second match of the season.

Freshman Jennifer Loo (Mililani) is the starting outside left midfielder for the Idaho State Bengals, defending Big Sky Conference champions. She assisted on goals in ISU's first two matches, a 3-1 win over Utah Valley State and a 4-0 shutout of Boise State.

Bethany Nishimoto, a junior striker from Hanalani, scored two goals and assisted on the third as the Dordt College (Sioux Center, Iowa) Lady Defenders beat Wayne (Neb.) State 3-0 in its season opener.

Nishimoto duplicated that effort four days later in a 4-1 win over the Bellevue (Neb.) Bruins.

Karley Peterson, a sophomore striker from Leilehua, scored the match-winning goal in the 82nd minute as Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) won its opener 4-3 over the Savannah College of Art & Design.

Kenji Treschuk, a junior midfielder from Moanalua, has scored two goals in Penn State's first four matches.

Shari Nishikawa scored the Loyola Marymount Lions' first goal of the season. The senior midfielder from Iolani hit the net with an unassisted effort at 5:47 in the season opener, a 2-0 win over Cal State Northridge.

Coaches

John Barry (Iolani, Lafayette) is in his second season as the men's assistant soccer coach at Richmond. His responsibilities include goalkeeper training, recruiting, scouting, video coordination, academic monitoring and administrative duties.

Mike McCarthy (Kalaheo), a four-year standout in the goal for Gonzaga, is an assistant coach for the Bulldogs. He will focus primarily on coaching the goalkeepers and act as the men's soccer liaison with Gonzaga's strength and conditioning coaches. McCarthy also is working on his masters in business administration.

Ryan Stanley (Kaiser) is the goalkeeper coach at his alma mater handling the Pacific Boxers men's and women's teams.

Tahiti bound

Walea Kalama returned to Tahiti for his third season with AS Pirae. He is a starter as outside left defensive back/outside midfielder.

"I'm a marking back on defense, then when we have the ball, I became an attacking outside winger," said Kalama.

The highlight of his season a year ago was going to France to play in the "Coup de France" after AS Pirae qualified by winning the Cup of Polynesia.
