Isle beach cleanup
invites volunteers

Hawaii residents are invited to join "the world's largest, daylong volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment" on Saturday.

Known locally as "Get the Drift and Bag It," the beach cleanup has been promoted by The Ocean Conservancy for 18 years.

Everyone from keiki to kupuna can participate at whatever level suits them, from walking the shoreline and picking up cigarette butts with rubber gloves to diving for underwater garbage.

Each island has a participant coordinator. Call 956-2872 on Oahu; 961-8695 on Hawaii; 635-8290 on Kauai; and 877-2524 on Maui. Participants should bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent and wear durable footwear and gloves.
