1969: Bette Midler’s
‘Fiddler’ role gets
New York notice

LOCAL gal Bette Midler continues her role of the eldest daughter in the Broadway company of "Fiddler on the Roof" and is now doubling on Fridays and Saturdays as a singer in the African Room. She was recently written up, including a photo, in the big "City Beat" column of the N.Y. Daily News. (Sept. 17, 1969) ...

NO wonder Sen. Dan Inouye didn't get excited when an elderly gentleman in Washington referred to him as a "little Jap." Right here we have good Italian Lin Comito calling his new downtown restaurant the Golden Guinea, and now unmistakable Teuton Peter Birnbaum, of Beethoven's Fifth, has named a new tomato juice and vodka drink the Kraut Mary. Perhaps we should start signing off columns with Mick Finn. (Sept. 20, 1973) ...

A SMALL story in yesterday's paper mentioned that Roslynn Carter greeted five Mexican children at the White House and accepted a copy of the book "Mexico as Seen by Her Children" but failed to mention that the publisher of the book is Bob Goodman, a localite who formerly owned Island Heritage before selling it to Honolulu Magazine. An exhibition of paintings and text from the book is on view at the Organization of American States building in Washington, another Goodman coup. (Sept. 20, 1979) ...

PEOPLE are now calling Wailea "Wimbledon West" since the unveiling of three grass tennis courts, and the Wailea Beach claims they're the only grass courts open for public play in America. (Sept. 17, 1982) ...

VISITING real estate expert Tony Downs got laughs as well as applause at the Locations Inc. sponsored seminar this week. Downs introduced himself as an economist: "somebody who works with numbers but doesn't have the personality to be an accountant." And discussing Hawaii's red-tape problem, Downs said that God created the world in six days but could have done it in four except it took two days to get planning permission for Hawaii. (Sept. 14, 1984) ...

NO word on whether he ate at a certain oceanfront restaurant in Honolulu, but the New York freelancer who took all the photos for the story entitled "Hawaii in Essence" for the autumn issue of National Geographic Traveler is John Dominis. He was formerly with Life magazine ... Then there's the Maui woman who was a winner in KGMB's "Bingo Game": Her name is Lahaina Luna. Nope, the she lives in Wailuku ... Al Harrington, Danny Kaleikini and Roy Sakuma are spearheading a "Save the Zoo" benefit Oct. 13 at the zoo. It's sponsored by both the city and, appropriately, the Diamond Head Lions Club. (Sept. 17, 1986) ...

YOU think you had a hectic weekend? Meet Jeffrey Biegel, the young concert pianist currently appearing as guest soloist with the Honolulu Symphony. Last Thursday evening, Biegel was in Copenhagen performing Prokofiev's Concerto No. 2 with the Danish Radio Orchestra. The next morning, he caught a plane to London, then another to L.A. and a third immediately to Honolulu. He was met at the airport around 7 p.m. by an old friend, Honolulu piano instructor Ernie Chang, who drove him straight to the Blaisdell Concert Hall where he rehearsed Prokofiev's Concerto No. 3 with the symphony. Chang quipped that if it had been him doing all that flying, he'd be lucky to find middle "C" on the piano. (Sept. 20, 1988) ...

WANT to have fun with your tiny keiki this weekend? Then you might consider entering the second annual "Baby Olympics" and "Children's Health Fair" to benefit the March of Dimes. It's "Ready, Set, Goo for the Gold" time at Pearlridge Center tomorrow and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day. Children from 6 months to 3 years of age will compete in such events as the baby crawl, baby walk and minibasketball slam dunk contest. Even if you don't have a child that age, it should be a fun event to watch. Puppeteer and ventriloquist Bob Hartley will emcee the unique event. (Sept. 17, 1993) ...
