Wagner named new athletic director at BYUH

Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's basketball coach Ken Wagner has been named athletic director at the school, BYUH announced yesterday.

Wagner, who will continue to coach the Seasiders, has compiled a 250-130 record in 13 seasons. He previously served as athletic director from 1992 to 2000. Wagner replaces Randy Day, who resigned to concentrate on his teaching duties.

Longtime BYUH athletic department employees Mike Apo and Dawn Kunihara were appointed assistant athletic directors, Kunihara as the senior women's administrator.

Governor honors national champs: Linda Lingle was to host BYUH's NCAA Division II national champion men's and women's tennis teams, along with other Hawaii sports notables, today at the Governor's Office.

Volleyball fans warned about heavy traffic at UH

Fans headed to tomorrow night's Sprint Hawaii Invitational Tournament volleyball event at the Stan Sheriff Center should be prepared for possible traffic congestion in and around the Hawaii campus.

The Mana Maoli "Welcome Back to School" free concert is set for the same day, and a large crowd is expected for both events.

Parking in the upper campus lots mauka of Dole Street will be free, while lower campus and parking structure lots will be paid. There will be no parking on the "front lawn" areas at Bachman Hall and the UH Lab School. Free shuttles will circle the upper campus from 5 to 8 p.m.

ILH television debut has been pushed back

Tomorrow's Interscholastic League of Honolulu football doubleheader pitting Saint Louis against Kamehameha as well as Damien vs. Pac-Five won't be shown on OC-16 this week as originally planned, according to Chris Schutter of MCS Videoworks.

MCS is the production team the ILH will use to produce the games. The new scheduled start date for pay-per-view doubleheader broadcasts on OC-16 is likely to be Sept. 26 or Oct. 4, according to Schutter.

Schutter said the decision to move the broadcasts back was made because all parties involved -- the ILH, MCS, Oceanic Time Warner Cable and sponsors -- need more time to coordinate the broadcast effort. The ILH originally approved putting football and other sports on TV on Aug. 28, which left a small window to prepare for the opener. Scheduling conflicts were also part of the decision, Schutter said.

Don Botelho, the ILH executive director, said he's waiting to sign a contract making the TV agreement binding.

Schutter said the pay-per-view price for doubleheaders will be between $9.95 and $12.95. He added that plans are in the works to broadcast ILH boys and girls volleyball this fall and possibly basketball, wrestling, softball and baseball later this school year.

BMX state championships tomorrow, Sunday

The Wheeler Army Air Field will host the Hawaii BMX state championship finals Sunday at 4 p.m. The state championship will be a two-race series, following tomorrow's pre-race at 6 p.m.
