Lynch continues to lead on the Big Island

Koolau pro John Lynch shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday take a two-stroke lead going into today's final round of the 13th AT&T Aloha Section PGA Stroke Play Championship at the Mauna Kea Golf Course on the Big Island.

Lynch's two-day 141 kept him ahead of Pearl Country Club's Beau Yokomoto (70--143) in the Championship Flight. Makena's Brian Sasada and Ko Olina's Kevin Carli share third at 144.

In the Senior Division, defending champion Larry Stubblefield and Steven Hookano were tied for the lead at 148. Rodney Acia and Mike Iyoki shared third at 150.

Ron Castillo Sr. aced the 168-yard No. 7 for his 10th career hole-in-one en route to a 79--152. He and Kenny Springer were tied for fifth.

Ting earns berth: Wailuku's Desiree Ting shot a 3-over 75 to earn medalist honors at yesterday's USGA Women's Mid-Amateur qualifier held at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Ting, a former University of Hawaii golfer, will represent the state at the national tournament Oct. 11-16 at Long Cove Club, Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Mona Kim-Lee carded a 78 and is the first alternate. The second alternate is Thidarat Suangtho (82) and third alternate is Jill Higashi (88).

BYU-Hawaii jumps to No. 2 in volleyball poll

Two wins against Top-10 opponents last week helped the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team move up five spots into second place in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll released yesterday.

The Seasiders received seven first- place votes for 798 points. UC San Diego, a team BYUH defeated on Saturday, moved up from No. 2 to No. 1. The Tritons received 22 first-place votes and 854 points.

Hawaii Pacific fell a spot to No. 15 after going 1-2 last week. The Seasiders defeated St. Mary's then lost to UC San Diego and then-No. 5 Barry; both of the losses came in five games after HPU had a 2-1 lead.

Takata named to World Judo Championship team

Wahiawa's Taylor Takata has been named to the U.S. team that will compete in the World Judo Championships in Osaka, Japan, tomorrow through Sunday.

Takata, an Iolani School product, will compete at 60-kilograms (132 pounds) in this Olympic team qualifier. This is the 21-year-old's second World Championship, having competed in 2001.

UH-Hilo to hold softball clinic

The University of Hawaii-Hilo will host a softball clinic Oct. 11 at the school's softball field.

The clinic is for players, ages 8-years-old through high school, as well as coaches. The registration deadline is Oct. 6, and must include a registration waiver and $15 participation fee.

Sign-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Lunch is included.

Vulcans athletic trainer Mike Garcia will give a talk on flexibility at noon. The UHH softball team will also have a scrimmage.

BMX state championship this weekend

The top BMX races will compete for the state championship Sunday at the Wheeler Army Air Field track.

The two-race event begins at 4 p.m.

Saturday's prerace event starts at 6 p.m.

Lokahi conducting registration

The Lokahi Volleyball Club is holding registration Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Roosevelt High School gym for all levels and ages.
