Man allegedly
assaults Maui teacher
WAILUKU >> Maui police are investigating an alleged assault yesterday on a 51-year-old Lihikai Elementary School teacher.
Police Lt. Glenn Cuomo said the woman was in her classroom at 5 a.m. preparing for her classes when a man in a ski mask entered the room.
Cuomo said the man said a couple of words, then struck her once in the head with what appeared to be a handgun.
"She screamed and he fled," Cuomo said.
Cuomo said the man, about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, ran toward Kumu Place.
The man did not appear to be a student or an irate parent, Cuomo said.
He said the teacher required a few stitches and was treated and released from Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Police have received no reports of similar incidents against teachers at Lihikai or neighboring schools. Lihikai Elementary, on Papa Avenue, serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade.
Police have classified the incident as a second-degree burglary and second-degree assault.
Cuomo asked anyone with information about the alleged attack to call the Maui Police Department at 244-6400.
