It's September, so it's time for the giant walking vegetables.

The Five a Day Friends are on the prowl for 5 a Day Month, courtesy of HMSA, keeper of the oversize mushroom, banana, pineapple, broccoli and papaya costumes.

All these stores, along with Daiei, will feature weekly 5 a Day fruit and vegetable specials and will have nutritional information on display. Visit www.hmsa.com for a 5 a Day Keiki Shopping List.

Primed for pine

That multieyed fruit with the prickly crown will be honored at the Maui Pineapple Picnic, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 in the plantation village of Haliimaile.

The day's events include plantation tours led by Maui Pineapple Co. field workers, a pineapple dessert contest, farmers' market and food sampling. Restaurants such as Haliimaile General Store and Hana Hou Cafe will have food for sale.

Hosting the activities will be the Maui Fresh Fruit Store. Call 808-573-5129.

The University of Hawaii Outreach College offers these classes in the next few weeks. Call 956-8400 or register online through the Web site, www.outreach.hawaii.edu.

Honolulu's Best Unexplored Asian Restaurants: Food science instructor and cookbook writer Walter Rhee leads this tour of Chinatown, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20. Meet at Marin Tower Courtyard, 60 N. Nimitz Highway. Cost is $38, plus a $15 lab fee payable in cash to the instructor on class day.

Vintage Program in Wine Appreciation and Service: A six-course introduction to wine tasting and professional service, 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 25 to Oct. 30, JMD Educational Center in Aiea. Cost is $135.

Farmers' showcase

Daiei's four Oahu stores will host "Re-Discover North Shore" next week, a product fair showcasing farmers and their produce.

Answering questions and demonstrating how to prepare their products will be growers from Kahuku Farms, Sugarland Farm, Lum Produce, Hauula Farm and more. They'll bring papayas, corn, lotus root, bittermelon, tomatoes, small bell peppers, giant green onion and other examples of the North Shore's bounty.

Fresh hearts of palm from the Big Island and Hamakua mushrooms will also be on hand.

The product fair runs Sunday through Sept. 21.

Parrothead Alert

art Our Tim Ryan reports that Jimmy Buffett is already telling mainland audiences about his 2004 Tiki Tour winter schedule, beginning in January at the Waikiki Shell. Other tour dates are being held, depending on whether his newest Margaritaville restaurant makes its scheduled opening that month at the Flamingo in Las Vegas. Buffett may also tour Australia, Fiji and Tahiti. Ryan also reports that Kenny Loggins is also scheduled to perform at the Waikiki Shell next spring.
