Extreme look

'Xotic' DVDs showcase Hawaii
along with adventurous,
demanding sports the isles offer

TAKE SOME OF the most extreme sports known to man -- kite-boarding, tow-in surfing, mountain-boarding, freestyle motocross, paragliding and sky-diving -- add beautiful women to the mix and use the natural scenery of Oahu as a backdrop, and you get "Xotic Xtreme: High Octane Adventure."

Produced by Los Angeles-based Pulse Entertainment, each of the three DVDs in the series focuses on a different aspect of extreme sports in the islands.

"The goal was to showcase Hawaii, and particularly Oahu, as an adventure destination," said Darren Chuckry, executive producer of the series and on-camera host. Footage was shot and edited locally during the summer of 2002 with the help of Digital Vision Studios, a local company that also produces "Hawaiian Xtreme Sports Television."

"That was the interesting part, working with a local Hawaii-based team," he said. "They had worked with so many of these athletes before (and) put out the word several months ahead of time before we came."

"WAVEBREAKERS: HAWAII" takes a look at three different sports that Hawaii residents are probably used to seeing on a regular basis. With models in tow, the cameras spend time kite-boarding with Kailua resident Robby Naish and 2001 world champion Martin Vari, surfing off Waikiki with 2001 Triple Crown Champion (and star of the television show "Boarding House: North Shore") Myles Padaca and learning how to wind-surf with world champions Bjoern Dunkerbeck and Roddy Lewis.

In "Rush Zone: Hawaii," the focus moves from the ocean to different extreme sports that take place in the air and on land. Cameras follow the models as they head to the North Shore to jump out of a plane with the folks from Pacific Skydiving, then go mountain-boarding with Oahu resident Akoni Kama. We also see footage of some of the models trying their hand at paragliding, and they also meet up with freestyle motocross riders Kenny "Cowboy" Bartam, Jeremy Carter, "Mad" Mike Jones and Drake McElroy during exhibitions at Aloha Stadium and the Blaisdell Arena.

The third DVD, "X-Girls Island Adventure," has the least amount of extreme sports footage and the most skin in the series -- but no nudity. Cameras follow the models to locations in town, Hawaii Kai, Lanikai and the North Shore as they complete work on the "Xotic Xtreme 2003/2004 Action Sports Calendar." Viewers are also treated to interviews with the models and get to watch them swim with dolphins and take part in some of the extreme sports featured on the other two DVDs.

FOR LOCAL residents, the "Xotic Xtreme: High Octane Adventure" series really isn't anything new in terms of the sports that were featured. What makes these DVDs different is the addition of attractive women who not only model and interview the male athletes, but also take part (or at least try to) in the extreme sports that were filmed.

"They're beautiful ... but they did all these sports," Chuckry said. "They got hurt but they came back. ... They were the real troupers."

Another nice touch is the inclusion of Hawaii musicians on the DVD soundtracks; fans will recognize songs by Chris Carillo, John Cruz, Barry Flanagan, Daniel Ho, Makana, Pacific Blu and Sani in the background as athletes shred onscreen and models strut their stuff for the cameras.
