Wahine put up
third straight zero
on road trip

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Hawaii soccer team posted its third consecutive shutout yesterday in defeating Long Beach State 1-0.

Robyn deHay scored her first goal for UH at 24:28 and the Rainbow Wahine made it stand up for the remaining 65 minutes.

Tasha Kai initiated the play with a solid defensive effort in the Hawaii half of the field.

"Tasha got the ball to Mia (Moe), who put a pass through to Robyn, and she finished with composure inside the right post from about 10 yards out," said UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing.

"We played very well until the last 10 minutes, when we started to protect the lead. When you play scared, you don't play confidently. We should have finished the match off long before that, but we missed some spectacular chances."

The 49ers outshot UH 13-11 and Wahine goalkeeper Mahie Atay made five saves, but Tenzing said none of the Long Beach State (0-4) shots proved dangerous.

"I really didn't think they were going to be able to score," Tenzing said.

This is the fourth time in the 10-year history of the program that the Rainbow Wahine have recorded three consecutive shutouts. They have yet to blank four consecutive opponents.

Fortunately for Hawaii, the temperatures dropped into the 70s yesterday and Tenzing made use of all his reserves in an effort to keep everyone fresh.

The Rainbow Wahine (3-1) will attempt to sweep the three-match mainland trip when they play the UC Riverside Highlanders (2-1). UCR has 1-0 victories over Central Michigan and Gonzaga and a 4-1 loss to Northern Arizona. The Highlanders beat Gonzaga on Friday on a goal by Renee Scachetti in the 85th minute.
