Smith wins cross country opener

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Chelsea Smith scooted over her home course in 17 minutes, 51 seconds to kick off the collegiate cross country season with a win in the BYUH Invitational at Laie yesterday.

The Seasiders didn't even come close to winning the team title though, scoring 69 points to finish second behind Hawaii Pacific. The Sea Warriors scored 24 points on a second-place finish from Nina Christiansen (18:18), a third place from Rachelle Miller (19:27) and a fourth place from Janine Brown (19:36).

Hilo finished in third place behind Colleen Cassidy's fifth-place effort, followed by UH-Manoa, Chaminade and Cal State Monterey Bay.

Friis outruns Lyau: Former Hawaii Pacific runner Christian Friis beat Jonathan Lyau by more than four minutes at the Barbers Point 20K run yesterday.

Friis finished in 1 hour, 11 minutes and 29 seconds while Lyau clocked a 1:15:41. Gary Nettles was third in 1:15:29.

Kristi Markowicz was the first woman to finish, running a 1:20:07 for 11th overall. Susan Burr was second in 1:23:37 and Rachel Portner was third in 1:28:58.
