Intel plans to unveil cheaper Itanium chips

SAN FRANCISCO >> The Intel Corp. plans to announce two new versions of its 64-bit Itanium 2 processor today as it tries to gain more widespread acceptance of its high-performance server chips.

The Itanium chip, which runs in dual-processor server systems, has been slow to gain widespread use, in part because of an earlier lack of software applications, but also because of the typically high cost of machines that use it. With the new versions, Intel says it has reduced the cost.

Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., said it had developed a version of the chip for large companies and technical installations that would cut the cost of a server using it to less than $7,000, a significant price point for a high-performance machine. Intel said it would also begin selling a lower-voltage version of the chip.

Japan's postal service faces privatization

TOKYO >> Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said today he will seek to sell off the country's postal service and state-owned road builders if he wins re-election as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Koizumi faces challenges from three candidates opposed to his policies in a Sept. 20 vote for the party presidency that will determine whether he remains prime minister. Koizumi vowed today to sell off postal services by 2007 and public road corporations, which are responsible for building and operating the nation's expressways, by 2005.

Koizumi also said in a policy paper released today that he will seek to ease regulations and to reform tax laws in a bid to stimulate the economy.
