Last year, a young Kahuku offense couldn't produce enough firepower to stave off a feisty Roosevelt squad and lost to the Rough Riders in a stunning upset.

Last night, the Red Raiders had too much on both sides of the ball for Roosevelt to handle as they raced to a 45-0 victory in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference game at Kahuku's field.

The Red Raiders avenged their 22-13 loss to Roosevelt last season by rolling up 464 yards on offense while limiting Roosevelt to 31. Kahuku improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the OIA and has outscored its opponents 115-0 this season.

"Our defense is always there to get us the ball," Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai said. "But even a great defense, without an offense, can only do so much."

Kahuku quarterback Waika Carvalho went 8-for-15 for 223 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for the Red Raiders' first score. Spencer Hafoka caught four passes for 140 yards and a score, and nine Kahuku backs combined to rush for 207 yards.

"We're five deep at some positions on offense, so we're just trying to roll guys in there," Livai said.

Roosevelt (1-2, 0-2) broke out some of the trickery that aided in its upset last year, using the duck-and-goose formation and getting a first down on a fake punt late in the first quarter. But the Red Raiders limited the youthful Rough Riders to 16 yards in total offense in building a 27-0 lead at halftime.

"We couldn't make any plays," Roosevelt coach Les Parrilla said. "We couldn't catch the ball, we couldn't throw the ball.

"Until our kids get a little more game experience under their belt, it's going to be difficult. Hopefully they'll be OK."

Kahuku wasted little time in taking control of the game. The Red Raiders recovered a fumbled snap on the game's first play from scrimmage to give Kahuku the ball at the Roosevelt 34. A 39-yard pass from Carvalho to Hafoka set up Carvalho's 15-yard touchdown run.

A 41-yard punt return by Hafoka set up Kahuku's next score, a 5-yard plunge by Darren Magalolo.

In the second quarter, Carvalho hit Hafoka on third and 18 on a screen play that Hafoka took for an 85-yard score.

The Red Raiders went up 27-0 on a 38-yard bomb from Carvalho to Frank Bracewell.
