Veneri named interim sports director at KHON

The former weekend anchor replaces Alema Harrington, who leaves the local Fox affiliate this week.

Veneri, a former University of Hawaii football player, has worked in the Channel 2 sports department the past seven years. He has been the weekend anchor since July, 2002.

Harrington, sports director since April, had a "mutual parting of the ways" with the station, Veneri said.

"I feel bad about the situation. I don't want to see anyone leave," Veneri said. "But I am extremely excited about the opportunity to be the sports director here. I'm looking forward to working next to (longtime news anchor) Joe Moore every night and helping to keep Channel 2 number one."

Harrington and KHON and KGMB general manager Rick Blangiardi were unavailable for comment last night.

Bruce Irons upsets brother

Wild card entrant Bruce Irons beat his brother, Andy Irons, in the third round of the Boost Mobile Pro at Lower Trestles, Calif., yesterday.

Bruce won the battle of Kauai surfers by just 0.33 points, 15.5-15.17, and will take on Brazilian Paulo Moura in the fourth round.

The contest is the seventh of 12 events on the ASP World Tour and is worth $30,000 to the winner. Bruce Irons is Hawaii's lone representative left in the competition because Kalani Robb fell to Nathan Hedge of Australia yesterday by just .31 points.
