1969: Wahiawa trees saved
with necks on chop block
STATE highway crews were about to chop down a group of giant poinciana trees growing on Kam Highway near Wahiawa more than a year ago, but Mililani town landscape gardener Goro Nakamura yelled "Woodsman, spare that tree," or something like that, and now has eight tons' worth of trees blooming on one of Mililani's bustling avenues. THE Hy Greensteins were dining at Nick's the other night when a waiter brought over a note scribbled on a napkin. It was too dark to read, so Greenstein tossed it away. Five minutes later, another note, also crumpled and disposed of. Finally, the note-sender came over to the Greenstein table, and Hy's teeth nearly fell out when Nixon crony Murry Chotiner delivered personal greetings from the prez. (Sept. 7, 1970) ...

STAPLES: Hot Dog Annie sends evidence that the latest claim by ear staplers is that they can promote breast enlargement. That follows after making you quit smoking, lose weight and regain potency. We were ready for an all-purpose staple until the breast-enlargement claim entered the picture. Annie reports that her good pal Charlotte Simmons (formerly with the "Five-O" casting office) used up her whole stapling machine in hopes of emulating Raquel Welch, but so far it hasn't helped. THE latest headache that Silver Cloud Limousine Service owner Jim Wilkinson had to endure came when a pickup truck locked wheels and slammed into the side of his brand-new Lamborghini. TWENTY years ago there'd have been a miniriot at the airport, but yesterday, George Harrison, one-fourth of the Beatles of yore, boarded an Aloha Airlines plane to return to his Maui home with nary a ripple of recognition. ... That contrasts with Kareem Abdul-Jabbbar, who is, of course, physically much more imposing than Harrison, not to mention at the top of game with the L.A. Lakers. He frequently commutes between his Kauai digs and Honolulu, also on Aloha. That first-class legroom comes in handy when you're more than 7 feet tall. Once he entered the Executive Club lounge, some Lakers fans spotted him and asked if they, too, could get into the lounge and talk to him. Told it was for first-class passengers only, they upgraded their tickets just to join Kareem in the lounge for a few moments. (Sept. 12, 1986) ...
