Mideast peace to be
discussed by 2 Israelis

Two residents of Israel, a Muslim and a Jew, will discuss the prospects for peace in the Middle East at a peace vigil and symposium 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Park.

The "Investigating Peace" event was planned for the eve of the second anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It is sponsored by Aloha Peace House, a local organization seeking peace and understanding in the Middle East.

The keynote speakers are Rabbi Eliyah McLean, of Jerusalem, the founder of Peacemakers Circle, who has initiated reconciliation projects between the two faiths; and Rami Mahamid, of Faradis village, a coordinator of youth activities for the interfaith organization.

Panelists who will continue the discussion include Glenn Paige, of the Center for Global Nonviolence; Vaughn Beckman, of Friends of Sabeel; University of Hawaii communications professor Majid Tehranian; attorney Greg Kinkley; and historian Willis Moore. University of Hawaii religion professor Ramdas Lamb will be moderator.

McLean and Mahamid will speak again at a 12:30 p.m. Thursday lecture at Leeward Community College.
