Grants to boost safety for battered women

The Office of Violence Against Women has awarded more than $1.2 million in grants, aimed at improving the safety of Hawaii's battered women and the prosecution of their abusive spouses, to the state Department of the Attorney General.

The office, under the U.S. Department of Justice, awarded $750,000 to improve the long-term safety of battered women and their children and support the development of family visitation centers in all four Hawaii counties, U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo announced yesterday.

The grant will also go to increasing accessibility to services in rural communities.

A second grant for $497,877 was awarded to better the technology used to prosecute spouse abusers.

The grant will be used to hire two deputy prosecutors and buy digital cameras for domestic violence investigations.

Kubo said the grants will enhance victim safety and support families with a history of domestic violence.

Man is arrested trying to steal bikini

A 37-year-old Hawaii Kai man was arrested for robbery last night after he allegedly tried to make off with a thong bikini bottom from a Kakaako swimsuit store.

Police said the man entered the store on Makaloa Street about 7:30 p.m. and asked one of the store's owners, a 48-year-old woman, to try on a thong bikini. When the woman refused, the man took a bikini bottom off a hanger, put it in his pocket and attempted to leave the store.

The store owner chased after the suspect. She told police that as she was attempting to grab the swimsuit hanging from the suspect's pocket, the man hit her in the chest with his elbow. Another of the store's owners caught the suspect and held him until police arrived.

The man was arrested under suspicion of second-degree robbery. He was released without charges this morning pending investigation.
