'All Dressed Up'
From Studio 54 to Studio 1, the best elements of early 1980s punk, disco and glam return via the Urban Nomad fashion show at 9:30 tonight.
The fashion event is part of Kealoha Wong's First Thursday Poetry Slam, starting at 8 p.m. at Studio 1, 1 No. King St.
"All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go" is inspired by the 1980s club scene that's finding rebirth in the '00s as the Electroclash Movement -- a full sensory, Technicolor melding of music, poetry, performance and visual art, and fashion.
The earlier scene evolved around such clubs as Area, Palladium, Limelight and Mud Club, from which emerged such artists as Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Blondie and the Talking Heads.
Urban Nomad's show creates a fantasy land of Russian princesses, military baby dolls, and vintage finds, served up as commentary on the state of fashion on an island.
"Dressing up is an art, and what you see on the street is not art," said designer Frieda Hulse. "What I don't like to hear is people asking, 'Is it Halloween?' People who like to dress up are made to feel self-conscious, and they almost have to create a place in their mind where it's safe to indulge in their fantasies."
Admission to the slam is $3 before 8 p.m. and $5 after 8 p.m. The fashion show is set to start at 9:30 p.m. For more information, call 387-9664.
