Dance Hall Crashers
hit Pipeline
IT'S BEEN confirmed -- the Dance Hall Crashers are indeed on their way back to Honolulu.
At least one local radio station and a Web site listing upcoming concerts have mentioned the show, but the folks at Goldenvoice (who are actually promoting it) didn't make an official announcement until Friday. The Crashers perform Oct. 17 at Pipeline Cafe, almost two years since they last played here at the former World Cafe.
Tickets are scheduled to go on sale Sept. 13 at all the usual places for $18.50; call 589-1999 for more info, or 877-750-4400 to purchase by phone ...
SEVEN YEARS have passed since I first played Natural Vibrations on the radio as a college student in Los Angeles. The Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning band has since opened for the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Cliff and UB40, and in the process solidified themselves as one of the top reggae groups in the islands (no Jawaiian pop stuff here, kiddies).
Thanks to the nice people at Mountain Apple, I rolled around all last weekend with their new album, "The Circle," in my truck's CD changer. If you're a reggae fan, don't pass on this one; the album hits local store shelves today ...
NO REST for the weary: Hope you've had enough time to recharge after the long Labor Day weekend, because things get started all over again tomorrow night at the W Honolulu.
Hailing all the way from Ottawa, Canada, house deejay and producer Martin Villenueve (MV for short) headlines the 21-and-over party, starting around 10 p.m. DJ Danny Yun will also man the decks for a bit during the evening. Best thing about this event? It's absolutely free to check out ...
ON THURSDAY, get down to the Wave Waikiki for a chance to meet the deejays from KTUH, the radio station run by students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Dubbed the "Afterschool Special," this party serves as a station fundraiser and also gives some of the deejays a chance to play in public for the first time. While we're all familiar with DJs Bennie James, G-Spot, Kavet the Catalyst, Sifu "Jive" Walker, Loriel, Miss Angel and Big Bar, others like DJs Caju, joan9, MetaLX and Terri will get a chance to let their faithful listeners put a face to the name. Doors open at 9 p.m. for this 18-and-over event; bring your college ID for $2 off the cover charge. Call 299-1940 ...
