[TURNING POINT]

Cockheran sets tone with early big gain

Appalachian State learned quickly it was in the deep end without a life vest last night against Hawaii's run-and-shoot.

On UH's first play from scrimmage, Jason Whieldon fired a pass to a wide-open Jeremiah Cockheran 20 yards downfield, against a not-very-good attempt at zone defense by the Mountaineers.

The play went for the first 35 of UH's 206 first-quarter passing yards, and showed that ASU coach Jerry Moore wasn't fibbing when he said prior to the game that his defensive backs were unschooled in pass defense.

Four plays later, Warriors running back John West was in the end zone after a 13-yard draw, and UH was off to the races.

[COMING UP]

Hawaii gets extra week to prepare for No. 8 USC

The Warriors have Saturday off, giving them more time to prepare for a visit to eighth-ranked Southern California on Sept. 13.

Hawaii will stay on the mainland as it prepares to play Nevada-Las Vegas the following Friday. Since June Jones became coach in 1999, Hawaii is 3-2 after a bye week (including the game at Nevada in 2001, which the Warriors lost).

UH won road games at Texas-El Paso 31-6 and Rice 33-28 with an extra week to get ready during the 2002 campaign.
