Seasiders suffer second loss
The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team lost its second match in two days yesterday, falling 30-17, 30-28, 30-28 to No. 6 UC San Diego at the Coyote Classic at San Bernardino, Calif.
The Seasiders completed the season-opening tournament 2-2 after beating Sonoma State 30-26, 30-26, 30-14 earlier yesterday.
The Tritons limited Yu Chuan Weng to 11 kills and Chun Yi Lin only dropped seven kills. Weng and Lin combined for 37 kills against Sonoma State. Lin made the all-tournament team and reserve Aimee Crippen hammered 12 kills with just one error on the second day of the tournament.
HPU still perfect: Hawaii Pacific beat Southwest Minnesota 30-16, 30-19, 30-23 to improve to 4-0 in the Hawaiian Style Classic at Hilo last night.
Vera Oliveira, who was named tournament MVP after the game, dished out 35 assists and buried seven kills while hitting .462 in the game. Nadica Karleusa and Flavia Brakling each had 13 kills for the Sea Warriors.
Arizona State takes No Ka Oi title
Arizona State posted its second consecutive victory to capture the season-opening Ohana Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi Soccer Tournament championship last night.
The Sun Devils again scored early and went on to defeat Bowling Green 5-1 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park stadium.
The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine (0-1) play the BGS Falcons for the runner-up position today at 5 p.m.
It took ASU four minutes, 37 seconds to get on the scoreboard as Brittany Cooper drove a direct, 26-yard free kick into the upper right corner of the Falcons goal.
Patrice Feulner had her point-blank attempt saved by BGS goalkeeper Ali Shingler by a quick reaction foot save with 13:50 gone.
