"Pacific Jouneys" by Peter Hendrie (Peter Hendrie Photography, price unknown) |
A staff photographer for Pacific Panoramas magazine, Hendrie traveled far across the ocean to create colorful photographic essays on the vibrant cultures of this great ocean. When the magazine folded, he realized that he was creating a modern anthropological resource and continued journeying, making more than two dozen field trips. Hendrie primarily stayed south of the equator, venturing north only to shoot Hawaii.

The pictures are beautiful, and extraordinarily well printed -- the colors pop off the page. You may need blinders. On the other hand, the images presented here are sparkling and pristine, and there's no sign of "civilization" anywhere to be seen, except for some well-manicured vacation resorts.

It's a dreamy, postcard view of one of the most dynamic regions on Earth, but Hendrie lets commercial instincts get ahead of his journalistic intentions. Still, what pictures! There's also a well-meaning essay by history professor Brij Lal on Pacific cultures. Check pacificjourneys.com for pricing info.
