Spirituality and health will be focus of talks
A series of talks and meditation connecting spirituality with mental and physical health will begin Thursday at the Institute for Research in Human Happiness, 1259 S. Beretania St.
"Bouncing out of Depression" is the theme of the series at the headquarters of the Japan-based organization, which is also known as Kofuku-no-Kagaku Hawaii. All sessions are free but donations will be accepted.
The Rev. Sean Matsumoto will lead presentations that will begin at 6 p.m. on the following dates:
>> Thursday: "What Is Depression?"
>> Sept. 18: "Burnout?"
>> Oct. 2: "When It Rains, It Pours"
>> Oct. 16: "Shifting Into You"
>> Oct. 30: "Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired"
>> Nov. 13: "Energy Boost"
Conference to explore seniors' role in church
The role of senior citizens as a resource for churches and objects of ministry will be explored during a two-day conference sponsored by the California-Pacific Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Workshops on a dozen topics will be offered at the 13th annual Older Adults Conference Oct. 3 and 4 at Harris United Methodist Church. The workshops are open to members of all churches, with Sept. 8 as the registration deadline.
The Rev. Richard Gentzler, director of the United Methodist Center on Aging and Older Adult Ministries in Tennessee, will speak about demographic changes in society and some myths and realities of an aging population. The other keynote speaker, Kent M. Keith, author of "The Paradoxical Commandments," will speak on applying personal perspective in seeking happiness.
Workshop speakers will include Marilyn Seeley, long-term care planner for the state Executive Office on Aging; the Rev. Clarence Liu, director of patient and family services at Hospice Hawaii; Sara Funamura, education coordinator of Alzheimer's Association, Aloha chapter; and Brian Misaka, psychologist and clinical director of Meier Clinics of Hawaii.
