Maui County purchases
old Wailuku Pool

WAILUKU >> Maui County has completed the purchase of the old Wailuku Pool for $700,000.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa announced the purchase of the half-acre property at Wells and South Market streets yesterday.

Parents and students at Wailuku Elementary and Iao Intermediate schools asked the county to buy the pool property, which has been used for generations to teach swimming to youths.

The Arakawa administration asked for an independent appraisal of the property before moving forward with the purchase.

"We are happy that a new generation of children will be able to continue to use this facility to learn to swim, just as their parents and grandparents did," Arakawa said.

The pool, about 75 by 42 feet, was built before World War II and was used at one time by military servicemen when it was part of the Alexander House recreation center.

The county, which takes care of maintenance and liability, has paid $1 a month in rent to the landowner Market-Wells Hui II LLC for the use of the pool since 1984.

The pool property was previously owned by the county but traded in 1983 for a similar-size parcel that is now part of the nearby tennis facility at Wells Park.
