Balance Center offers tips on avoiding falls

The Balance Center of the Pacific, a private facility dedicated to testing and providing rehabilitation for inner-ear- and balance-related disorders, is sponsoring a "Balance Awareness" week Sept. 21-27.

The event is being held during a national campaign by the Vestibular Disorders Association to promote awareness of balance and falls.

Robert Kissenberger, rehabilitation specialist with the center, said 1.6 million seniors were treated in emergency departments in 2001 for fall-related injuries, and 353,000 required extended hospital stays, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The public views falls as unpredictable and unavoidable "accidents," he said. "The literature, however, identifies falls as one of several geriatric syndromes that is treatable but widely underevaluated."

During the special week, the Balance Center, located in Suite 404, 600 Kapiolani Blvd., will provide free computerized balance assessments, resource information for the public and health-care professionals, and games and prizes.

Information gathered from screening participants will be used in a study of seniors.
