Gone to Maui,
but no one was home

IT seemed natural to look up old friends on Maui last weekend while there to see and review Patricia Watson's electric rock opera, "Soulmates." But I only made contact with one, Yvonne Biegel, and saw her just once because she had to care for her 11-month old baby. I stopped by Sarento's in Kihei for dinner, a delicious osso bucco, but proprietor Aaron Placourakis wasn't expected in until later. I stopped by Mulligans on the Wailea Blue Golf Course but neither Kevin O'Kennedy nor Patrick, former Murphy's bartender, was there. Fortunately it's just a three-wood away from the Diamond Resort, where I availed myself of a massage. I'd stayed there with a friend three years ago and returned for old times sake to find that the spas, one for men and one for women, now included a third for couples. I dropped by a favorite Maui spot, the Four Seasons, for breakfast, but found that G.M. Radha Aurora, a good pal, had taken the weekend off. One friend I did see was Bruce Bellingham, three-dot columnist for the San Francisco Examiner, who, like me, had flown in to see "Soulmates" and old friend (and former S. F.'er) Rod McKuen, who's in the show ...

Want to date a dog?

WHEN singer Shari Lynn stopped by the Perry and Price Hanohano Room show to plug her starring role in "Gypsy," opening next week at Army Community Theatre, she mentioned she was now the proud caregiver for a 2-year-old female bichon poodle, who's also in the show. She's also the dog's matchmaker and asked any P&P listeners with a dog interested in a romantic interlude to call in and possibly set up a date. Michael W. Perry and Larry Price, who've been doing their show for 20 years now, were nearly speechless, but acknowledged that a doggie dating service was a first for them ...

FROM a dog to a fox: Tracy Toguchi was a guest on Perry and Price's show this past Saturday and hit some skyrocketing notes on Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin songs. An astonished Perry asked, "How do you do that so early in the morning?" She responded, "I have to wake up very early." The result was that Perry asked her to be a guest on "The Hawaiian Moving Company" in the near future when the former Miss Hawaii begins work on a new CD. Traci will really have to get up early next Saturday when she appears in the Okinawan Festival Parade as one of two Okinawan Miss Hawaii's -- Cheryl Toma Sanders is the other. She'll sing the National Anthem at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand, with Cheryl accompanying her on keyboards. She'll also sing at that evening's "Beyond the Sea" fund-raiser along with yet another former Miss Hawaii, Billie Takaki ...

Buck stops here

WORLD-CLASS set designer Buck Henshaw, who just died, would have enjoyed that headline. Buck, a descendent of Capt. James Makee, will be honored at a service tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the family plot in Oahu Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who attend may contribute to the Hawaiian Humane Society. Tears will flow when yet another former Miss Hawaii, Cathy Foy, will sing at the service, doing Buck's song, "Our Last Aloha."
