QBert due back
for headline gig

IT'S NOT THE legendary matchup with human beatbox Rahzel that I first told you about back in May, but Sunday's DJ QBert show at Pipeline Cafe should keep heads happy.

According to www.thudrumble.com, it'll be QBert's first headlining gig in the islands in over four years, and the 18-and-over party also marks the return of Kaizo Speedgear and the Architechs to the Pipe. They were responsible for "Sweet and Sour" Saturdays this summer before Artist Groove Network took over the night back in July ...

WHILE I'M NOT the biggest metal maniac around, I'm glad I didn't pass on "Mike's Metal Madhouse" Friday at Studio 1.

Rolling in around midnight meant that I missed Plumpus and their opening set, but Ah Foon and the rest of Buddhist Priest were in fine form -- and they looked like they were having so much fun doing it! Mike Woo, the guy who came up with the idea for "Mike's Metal Madhouse," even jumped onstage at one point to do a song.

In a town where some people show up at an event just to be seen, it was nice to hang out with a crowd that didn't seem to care about much else than rocking out. I was surprised to see high school classmates Sheri Nishiki and Kristie Ushijima for the first time in years (in costume, no less!), and now I'm also able to say that I've seen KUMU-FM morning jock Bill Brennan and even the Star-Bulletin's own Craig Gima knocking a few back and banging their heads. 97.5 KPOI morning guy Double D was also on hand to host the party.

Need more metal in your life? Check out the Miltons, Pit Crew, 2face4 and Front on Saturday at Anna Bannanas starting at 9 p.m. for "Metallurgy: A Serious Education in Metal." And Buddhist Priest will be back on stage Sunday, this time with Sabbatar at Wave Waikiki. Call 946-5190 or 941-0424, respectively, for more details about the two shows ...

SPEAKING ABOUT the Wave, I managed to stop in on Sunday night there to check out the "Flash Festival," a celebration of tattooing as an art form (not an appreciation night for Flash Hansen, as some had thought).

Hopefully this isn't the only time local artists will be able to showcase their work -- I liked the stuff Mike Ledger and Yoshi brought in, but the total number of items on display was kind of disappointing ...
