is a year from starting
A non-profit partnership is proposing a senior living facility on a vacant three acres fronting Ala Wai Boulevard, directly across the canal from the Hawaii Convention Center.
Honolulu Neighborhood Housing Services would like to build a 26-story, 294-foot tower to house a 33-bed skilled nursing unit, a 26-bed Alzheimer's unit, a 14-bed assisted living unit, and 122 independent living units.
The organization purchased the property in January from Outrigger Hotels and Resorts and recently filed a draft environmental assessment with the state. It must still obtain financing, complete the planning and permitting process and undergo public hearings.
The organization partnered with Graham Murata Russell to develop the project, to be called Kapiolani Akahi Continuing Care Retirement Community, said Don Graham, spokesman for the effort. Graham built Arcadia on Punahou Street in 1967 when he was an executive with Dillingham Corp.
Graham said the location would be convenient and an ideal spot for a senior living facility.
"It's an easy place for people to come and visit. Seniors don't want to live so far away that people can't come and visit," he said.
Featured amenities would include an indoor swimming pool, exercise room, recreation deck, library, gardens and parking. The project is at least a year from getting started, Graham said.
"It's still very preliminary. We have an $80 million bond issue from the state but it has to be guaranteed by a Hawaii credit guarantor and we still have to get pre-construction funding and permits," Graham said.
