The second annual Duke's Ho'olaule'a, held in Waikiki over the weekend, celebrated the 113th anniversary of the birth of surfer Duke Paoa Kahanamoku. John Gunsulas, a member of the City & County of Honolulu Lifeguards team, launched off his surfboard during a surf water polo match on Saturday against the UH Wahine water polo team. The sport, which was popular in the 1930s and 1940s, features the same rules as water polo but adds 8-foot-long surfboards, which gives players the advantage of added height.

The Ho'olaule'a continued yesterday with the return of Brunch on the Beach. Diners enjoyed signature dishes prepared by area restaurants at tables set up along Kalakaua Avenue.
