Lingle taps HPD veteran
for public safety position
John Souza, a 27-year veteran with the Honolulu Police Department, has been named administrator for the state Public Safety Department's Special Services Division, formerly known as the sheriff's office, by Gov. Linda Lingle.
A former police sergeant and detective, Souza assisted the U.S. attorney's office in several major forfeiture cases. He also worked with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Souza will work with John Peyton, director of the state Public Safety Department. Peyton is a former deputy U.S. attorney.
The Special Services Division is responsible for state law enforcement operations. Souza said he will oversee the sheriff's office, the state airports, warrants and the state canine unit.
Case joins House panel on regulatory reform
U.S. Rep. Ed Case has gained a seat on the House small-business subcommittee on regulatory reform and oversight.
Case is already on two other small-business subcommittee panels: rural enterprise and work-force empowerment.
A release from Case's office notes that while most House members are restricted to serving on no more than two committees and four subcommittees, members can receive waivers to serve on more panels.
Case serves on three committees and seven subcommittees.
The new post on the small-business subcommittee on regulatory reform has jurisdiction over the regulatory and paperwork policies of all federal departments and agencies.
