Federal security agency seeks airport screeners
The Transportation Security Administration is recruiting part-time federal security screeners to work at a number of airports, including Kona International Airport on the Big Island.Duties would include identifying dangerous objects in baggage and on passengers, the TSA said Friday.
"TSA is committed to properly allocating resources to the checkpoint lanes to keep passenger wait times to a minimum," TSA chief James Loy said in a news release.
Hourly wages can range from $11.30 to $16.96, depending on experience and locality pay.
Part-time security screeners are also eligible for federal benefits, including health and life insurance, retirement, paid annual vacation and sick leave.

Pedestrian hit by car in Nanakuli accident
An elderly man was critically injured after he was hit by a car in Nanakuli on Friday.Police said the man was crossing Farrington Highway 275 feet west of Mohihi Street when he was hit by a 1999 Lincoln Navigator traveling east on the highway about 8:20 p.m.
The car was unable to stop in time to avoid the victim, police said.
A 45-year-old female driver and three passengers in the car were not injured, but the pedestrian was taken by helicopter to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.
Police said the victim sustained head injuries and possible internal injuries.
Alcohol, drugs and speed do not appear to be factors, they said.

Waialua fire causes $350,000 in damage
Damage is estimated at $350,000 after a fire burned a building housing two businesses in Waialua yesterday morning.About 35 firefighters battled the blaze, which started about 2:45 a.m. at 67-016 Farrington Highway.
The fire was contained several hours later at 4:25 a.m., but two businesses in the building, Waialua Food and Catering and a beauty shop, were destroyed. A third unit was vacant.
Officials said fighting the fire was complicated by two propane tanks next to the building.
