Hawaii tops the U.S. in state championships
With a state championship added in girls water polo next year, Hawaii now holds 32 state championships recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations which is tops in the United States.
"We are very pleased and proud that Hawaii, one of the smallest states, is able to offer opportunities for state-level competition in more sports than much bigger states -- in fact, more than any other state," said Keith Amemiya, executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.
In the six years since Amemiya took over, state team championships have increased 75 percent.
Hawaii is the only state to hold state championships in canoe padding and judo and is one of only two states to sponsor state championships in girls wrestling, riflery and now water polo.
Massachusetts and New Jersey are next with 31 championships sponsered while New York and New Hampshire hold 30.
