Amazing win
also earned
Kapalua slot

LUCKY Kapalua Marketing V.P. Kim Carpenter and Director of Golf Marty Keiter were at the PGA Championships last weekend. They got to see the unreal win by Shaun Micheel, who'd never won a major tourney, and invited him to take a slot at Kapalua's season-opening champions-only PGA Tour Mercedes Championship in January. With such other participants as Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, David Love III, Fred Couples and Jim Furyk, you can be sure Micheel will happily tee off with them Jan. 5 through 11 on the Plantation Course ...

BEND 'em like Beckham: It's been a whirlwind tour for former Honolulu Club sales and marketing head Terri Beckham. After leaving the club and moving to New York, she headed up the Away Spa at the "W" Hotel, but soon left for La Quinta's spa in Palm Springs. Now she's moved again, this time North to Napa Valley for a spa job there. She lives in Yountville, practically next door to Compadres Bar & Grill. So when vacationing back in Hawaii, where did Terri go to eat? Why, to Compadres in Ward Centre, of course ...

Chili and salsa

ON Aug. 31, chef Russell Siu of Kakaako Kitchen will host the annual Chili Recipe Challenge. Some 15 finalists will cook up their prized recipes, vying to win prizes in excess of $1,000. That'll buy a lot of beans if, like me, you insist on beans in your chili, unlike those Texas "purists." ... And for those who are warmed up and ready for a bit of salsa, be advised that there'll be such musicians as Rolando Sanchez & Salsa Hawaii putting on a dance showcase Sept. 26 at the Ala Moana Hotel's Hibiscus Ballroom. Some local beauties as Mrs. Hawaii, Miss Hawaii and Miss Chinatown will be there to take in sounds described by one musician as "salsa-merengue-cha cha-Latin-jazz-cumbia-Tex Mex and more. It's National Hispanic Heritage Month ...

MANOA Valley Theatre's ultra-busy technical director, Shell Dalzell, suffered a heart attack and ended up in Kaiser Hospital's "restricted area." No visitors or outside phone calls ... The upcoming play on the UH theater schedule is such a massive project that director Dennis Carroll is reaching outside (as well as inside) the university community to audition. The play, for mature audiences only, is John Ford's tragedy about incest, "Tis Pity She's a Whore." Auditions take place Sept. 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. on the Kennedy Theater mainstage. There are roles for 19 men and nine women, plus altar boys ...

Balls

HAWAII'S cultural community are already planning a pair of balls. One is Ballet Hawaii's Black & White Ball, "New York, New York" on Sept. 20 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom. Co-chairs are designer Anne Namba and Susie Schull, mom of dancer Amanda Schull ... And if you like can-can dancing, set aside Nov. 8 for the 18th annual Hawaii Opera Theatre Ball. The theme is "The Merry Widow Ball," though married folks are welcome. It'll be held at the Sheraton Waikiki Ballroom. These things don't come cheap -- tickets are $225 per person. And wouldn't you know, "The Merry Widow" is on the 2004 schedule ...
