McLachlin advances at U.S. Amateur

OAKMONT, Pa. >> Honolulu's Parker McLachlin defeated Greg Reynolds of Grand Blanc, Mich. 3 and 2 yesterday to advance to today's second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Oakmont Country Club.

McLachlin, a Punahou graduate, is among 32 golfers to qualify for today's play and faces Patrick Carter of Huntington, W.Va., in a second-round match. The field will be trimmed to 16 in the morning round and reduced to eight quarterfinalists in the afternoon.

McLachlin opened the tournament with a 76 on Monday, but rebounded with a 3-under-par 67 on Tuesday to qualify for the 64-player match play field.

California crew leads Billfish tournament

California's Pajaro Valley Gamefish Club caught a blue marlin yesterday to maintain its hold on first place in the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

The team leads the field with 966 points. Tournament Anglers of the Big Island is second with 700 points and Newport Beach of Japan is third at 650.

The week-long tournament continues at 7 a.m. today from Honokohau Harbor.

Seven marlin were caught yesterday, all of which were tagged and released.

Wahine track team earns academic honor

The University of Hawaii track and field team was awarded All-Academic Women's Team honors by the United States track Coaches Association yesterday. Two members of the Wahine squad also received individual accolades.

As a team, the Wahine posted a grade-point average of 3.2, placing 27th among women's Division I programs.

Victoria Chang, a junior from Honolulu, and Hanna Bremler, a freshman from Tyreso, Sweden, were named Academic All-Americans. Chang had a gpa of 3.76, while Bremler posted a 3.61.

UH to host Masters Diving championships

The U.S. Masters National Diving Championships open tomorrow at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex on the University of Hawaii campus.

Close to 50 divers are entered in the competition which runs through Sunday. UH head diving coach Mike Brown is among the entrants. Herb Collins, 81, of California is the oldest diver entered.

The championships begin tomorrow with opening ceremonies at 9:50 a.m. Admission is free.

Islanders honor Taylor, Klaneski, White

Nian Taylor, Eddie Klaneski and Josh White earned top individual honors at the Hawaiian Islanders awards banquet last night at the Ala Moana Hotel.

Taylor was named the team's offensive player of the year. He led the Islanders with 73 receptions for 1,133 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Klaneski was the defensive player of the year after amassing 75 total tackles and intercepting a team-high four passes. He also led the team with 1,205 yards and two touchdowns on kickoff returns.

White won the team's ironman award for the top performer who played both offense and defense. White rushed for 302 yards and 14 touchdowns on offense. He recorded 27 tackles and broke up eight passes on defense.

Lineman Andy Ramos received the community service award. Staff awards were presented to Cristy Tamanaha (most improved), Angie Yoon (most inspirational) and Thomas Yoshida (employee of the year).

The Islanders went 11-7 in their second season in arenafootball2 and won the National Conference West Division championship.

Duke Kahanamoku honored in hoolaulea

A three-day celebration honoring Duke Kahanamoku begins tomorrow in Waikiki.

The second annual Duke's Hoolaulea will open with a Old-timers Beach Boy Celebration at Dukes' Canoe Club. Saturday's festivities include a surf water polo match with participants playing on surfboards off Kuhio Beach. The celebration concludes Sunday with the Duke's Ocean Mile Swim and the Waterman Challenge.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku foundation. More information is available online at www.dukefoundation.org.

Governors Cup polo on Sunday

The United States Polo Association tournament, capped by the Governor's Cup match, will be held Sunday at Waimanalo Polo Grounds.

Gates open at 1 p.m. The Governor's Cup game starts at 2:30 p.m. General admission is $3, children under 12 get in free.
