Food as art
For the sake of charity, chefs on Maui are studying up on their art history. The annual fund-raising event "Maui Chefs Present" has taken as its theme the punnily endearing "You 'Art' What You Eat," and has challenged participating chefs to present their dishes as an exhibit in the style of their favorite artist.
Their work will be juried in the manner of an art show.
Everything's on view and up for eating at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa on Kaanapali Beach.
The chefs: James McDonald (Pacific'O and I'o) Mark Ellman (Penne Pasta Café and Maui Tacos), Dean Louie (Café Sauvage), Michael Gallagher (Sea House), Alex Stanislaw (Plantation House), Tom Selman (Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar), John Zaner (Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua) and Kaanapali resort chefs Jon Benson, Bryan Ashlock, Thomas Muromoto, Bart Umidi and Bobby Masters.
The dishes include McDonald's Oysters with Summer of Love Juices and Benson's Frozen Mosaic Souffle.
Cost is $105, benefitting Maui charities. A silent auction will benefit the Cancer Institute Alliance. Call 808-667-9175.
