Aloha Stadium to add 'express lane'
Aloha Stadium will increase the number of turnstile gates by 50 percent and will once again allow fans to bring in small bags and purses in this upcoming University of Hawaii football season, it announced yesterday.
There will also be "express lane" security check lines for those with no bags.
"Hopefully this will expedite a lot of the problems we had before," Wackenhut Security site supervisor Ed Spezio said.
Aloha Stadium will also continue to host the swap meet on UH football game days.
Nakanelua to run in Paris
Hawaii resident Kelsey Nakanelua, who ran the 100 meters for American Samoa at the 2000 Olympics, is headed to Paris for the World Track and Field Championships this week.
Nakanelua is running in the 400 meters, an event he hopes to compete in at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
"I'm really excited about going to Worlds," Nakanelua said. "Ninety percent of the athletes who make it there for Samoa get in the Olympics."
Laamaomao wins Na Holo Kai canoe race
Laamaomao, captained by Matt Buckman, won last Saturday's Na Holo Kai sailing canoe race from Haleiwa, Oahu, to Nawiliwili, Kauai.
The Laamaomao shattered the course record by some two hours, thanks to 30-knot winds. The sailing canoe completed the 90-mile race in seven hours, the first time in eight years an Oahu boat has won this event.
The final race of the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association is the Kendall Pacific Challenge. The Sept. 20 event follows the coastline of Kauai from Nawiliwili to Waimea.
