Kathy Colin of Kailua won a gold medal in kayaking at the Pan American Games at Santo Domingo, D.R., yesterday.
"This feels great. I like the color of these medals better," Colin said.
Colin, who earned a silver earlier in the competition, got her gold by teaming with Ruth Nortje of Whitehouse Station, N.J., -- who won gold in the singles race just 90 minutes earlier -- to win the women's 500-meter doubles race. The duo cruised across the finish line in a time of 1:47.75, easily outdistancing second place Canada (1:52.51).
In the only other race involving a U.S. team, Benjie Lewis of Miami, Fla., and Brandon Woods of Kaneohe were denied a second piece of hardware in the 1,000 meter race when they finished fifth in a time of 1:36.29.
"Our technique was good and we really clicked today," Woods, who has only teamed with Lewis for a year, told usoc.org. "But we've got to be more efficient off the line and power at the finish."
The Brazilian team of Carlos Campos and Fabio Demarchi took the gold in a time of 1:33.09.
