Wahine volleyball makes final cuts

The Hawaii women's volleyball roster was trimmed to 18 yesterday, the number that Wahine coach Dave Shoji earlier said he would carry this season.

Walk-ons making the team are freshman defensive specialists Katie Carlson of Los Alamitos (Calif.) High and Iolani School's Raeceen Woolford. Also making the squad as a redshirt senior is Teisa Fotu, a Kahuku High graduate who played the past two seasons at Hawaii Pacific. As a redshirt, the 6-foot Fotu will be able to practice with the team.

Cut from a record-high fall camp turnout were freshmen Jen Wells and Kelly Ong from California; Melissa Yama out of Kapaa High; and Hawaii Prep's Carly Hayashikawa.

"It's a tough decision," said Shoji. "They're all talented with good volleyball skills. Otherwise, they wouldn't be here."

After six consecutive days of two-a-days, the Wahine will take today off as mandated by NCAA regulations. Preparation for Friday's season opener against Kansas State resumes tomorrow.

HPU baseball signs right-hander

Hawaii Pacific University coach Allan Sato announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Paul Valenzuela yesterday.

Valenzuela went 4-8 with a 5.29 earned run average for Gavilan College in California last season.

"Paul has the potential to be in the starting rotation next season," Sato said in a statement. "He didn't have the noticeable win-loss record to go with a low ERA or an impressive strikeout ratio, however, he displayed both the physical and mental discipline that will allow him to achieve those things."

Sea Warriors cross country adds pair: The HPU cross country teams added two new runners to their rosters this week.

Aaron Norton joined the men's team after transferring from Alabama, where he helped the Crimson Tide finish second in the Southeastern Conference last year.

Elizabeth Thompson, a graduate of Maranatha High in Pasadena, Calif., signed with the women's team.

The Sea Warriors' season begins on Sept. 6 in the Chaminade Invitational at the BYU-Hawaii campus.

Williams, Boss knock off top seeds

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. >> Hilo's Alika Williams teamed with Aaron Boss to upset the top-seeded duo of Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings 21-15, 21-19 yesterday and advance to the quarterfinals of the AVP Huntington Beach Open.

Williams and Boss, the 16th seed in the tournament, will face the ninth-seeded team of former University of Hawaii player Sean Scott and Todd Rogers today.

Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong also moved on to the quarterfinals, but with different partners. Metzger and Dax Holdren face Brent Doble and Karch Kiraly in a quarterfinal match. Wong and Eric Fonoimoana take on third-seeded Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh.
