United Church of Christ members John Matapua, right, and Keoni Alip placed hot rocks in the belly of a pig yesterday amid the steam wafting from other pigs waiting to be placed in an imu on the church grounds. Church members were preparing for today's 47th Annual Hawaiian Feast, offering an 11-course Hawaiian lunch as a benefit for the church, with some proceeds going to the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry. The group prepared 13 pigs, 1,900 pounds of poi, 950 pounds of tomatoes, 900 pounds of sweet potatoes and 62 cases of pineapples.

Former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki gave the keynote address last night at the gala banquet of the Asian American Journalists Association convention in San Diego. Speaking to more than 1,000 journalists from most major news organizations, the Kauai native said the embedded-journalists program during the Iraq war was a brilliant move as it told the U.S. soldiers' stories to the nation.
