A retired nurse who served as former Gov. Ben Cayetano's liaison on Lanai has been granted a deferral of a no-contest plea to tax-evasion charges.
Circuit Judge Dan Kochi ordered Letitia Castillo on Wednesday to pay a $5,000 fine and perform 500 hours of community service.
Castillo pleaded no contest in May to four counts of failure to pay general excise taxes for 1997 through 2000. She underreported rental income from a home in Honolulu, said Deputy Attorney General Dwight Nadamoto, who opposed the deferral because of the position she once held on Lanai.
"It happened over a three- or four-year period, so it showed a continual pattern," Nadamoto said.
Castillo and her attorney could not be reached for comment.
