The University of Hawaii has awarded its 2003 Regents' Medal for Excellence in Teaching to 14 professors, it was announced this week.
The faculty members were honored for their high level of subject mastery and scholarship, effectiveness in teaching and creativity, and personal values helpful to students, according to UH.
>> Mary Alexander, associate professor of English, Kauai Community College.
>> Krystyna Aune, associate professor of speech, UH-Manoa.
>> Rick Caufield, assistant professor of family and consumer sciences, UH-Manoa.
>> Linus Chao, professor of art, Hawaii Community College.
>> Leticia Colmenares, instructor of chemistry, Windward Community College.
>> John Conner, professor of English literature, Leeward Community College.
>> Kathy Ferguson, professor of political science and women's studies, UH-Manoa.
>> Jonathan Goldberg-Hiller, associate professor of political science, UH-Manoa.
>> Kakkala "Gopal" Gopalakrishnan, professor of oceanography, Honolulu Community College.
>> David Hammes, professor of economics, UH-Hilo.
>> Nelda Quensell, associate professor of botany, Kapiolani Community College.
>> Wayne Shiroma, associate professor of electrical engineering, UH-Manoa.
>> Lee Stein, instructor of human services, Maui Community College.
>> Terence Wesley-Smith, associate professor in Pacific Islands studies, UH-Manoa.
The 14 award recipients are scheduled to be honored at a ceremony in October.
