NEIGHBOR ISLANDS
Maui firefighters to battle Molokai blaze

WAILUKU >> Several Maui firefighters were sent to Molokai yesterday to help fight a brush fire that has burned about 3,000 acres.

Assistant Fire Chief Gordon Cordeiro said Molokai firefighters are "totally exhausted" from battling the blaze since Tuesday afternoon.

Cordeiro said the fire is not officially under control because there are still hot spots, but firefighters are holding the line around its perimeter in the Hawaiian homestead area in Hoolehua.

"We have a handle on it," he said.

Cordeiro said four Molokai firefighters have sought medical attention for smoke inhalation, eye irritation, foot problems and a strained back.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze and the extent of damage. Initial reports indicate the blaze has burned mainly dry pastures, killed a calf in a corral fire and caused $10,000 damage to a storage structure housing furniture and lumber for a residence.
