Waianae-bound traffic comes
to a halt after the accident
Waianae-bound traffic on the H-1 freeway came to a halt this morning after a cargo van flipped on its side just past the Waipahu offramp.
Police said the driver lost control of the van about 6:15 a.m. turning it on its side.
That caused a chain-reaction collision involving three other vehicles, two sport utility vehicles and a compact car whose drivers were trying to avoid hitting the van, police said.
At least three fire units and two ambulances were sent to the scene.
Three people including a female passenger in the cargo van were taken to area hospitals by ambulance.
One patient went to Tripler Army Medical Center while the other two were taken to Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi.
Emergency Medical Services officials said the victims suffered minor injuries.
The accident forced police to close all three Waianae-bound lanes of the freeway. Traffic was diverted to Kamehameha Highway until the vehicles were cleared from the roadway. Traffic in the Koko Head-bound lanes was slowed as drivers strained to see what was happening on the other side of the freeway. The Zip-Lane was not affected.
All Waianae-bound lanes were open by 8:45 a.m., police said.
