Hickam Air Force Base opened its gates to the public over the weekend during its annual Friends and Neighbors Weekend, which featured music, rides and access to various military aircraft, vehicles and weaponry. Vanessa Caro, 6, got a bird's-eye view of the base and a C-17 Globemaster III while riding the Ferris wheel yesterday.

Joo Won Choi, 8, of Kahala, handled an M2 .50-caliber machine gun at the air show. The gun has a maximum effective range of 1,830 meters and can shoot 550 rounds per minute.

Staff Sgt. Dustin Hertz drummed up some fun as part of the Air Force band Hana Hou, which played before a packed audience at the dining tent.

Gabrielle Poffenbarger, 2, braced herself against a gust of wind from the runway while sitting in a UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter. During wartime this aircraft is used for various duties, including troop insertion, casualty evacuation and urban operations.
