In search of Mai Tai
The Mai Tai supposedly debuted in Hawaii in 1953 when it appeared on steamship drink menus and in Waikiki hotels, though its origin has been debated ever since. Everyone wants credit for this libation of rum, orange curaçao, sugar syrup, almond syrup, ginger and lime.
Even if we can't pinpoint its origin, we can determine who makes the best today. Top mixologists from across the nation will vie in The World's Greatest Bacardi Mai Tai contest taking place Labor Day weekend at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott.
The competition begins 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 30, with two categories: Traditional Mai Tai using Bacardi Silver and New Wave Mai Tai using one of Bacardi's flavored rums. Drinks will be judged on taste, appearance and presentation. Spectators will be admitted free.
The Waikoloa Beach Marriott is offering a variety of packages for the event, and a special Marriott Leisure rate of $189 per night for a garden-view room. For reservations, call 800-922-5533, or log onto www.WaikoloaBeachMarriott. com.
