Colorful boats take over the
Ala Moana Beach Park lagoon

During the Eighth Annual AT&T Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival held yesterday in the Ala Moana Beach Park lagoon, AT&T crew steersman Kelford Chang pulled against the huge steering oar, maneuvering his boat into position for the start of a race. Teams from across the state and around the world competed in the races, which continue today from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.



PACIFIC SUBS GET NEW COMMANDER

Rear Adm. Paul F. Sullivan, right, succeeded Rear Adm. John B. Padgett III as commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, in a change of command ceremony Thursday aboard USS La Jolla (SSN 701). At left is Adm. Walter F. Doran, commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Padgett was the 30th flag officer to command the Pacific Sub Force. As COMSUBPAC, Padgett was responsible for more than 9,300 Navy and civilian personnel, 27 attack and eight ballistic-missile submarines, one support ship, and one deep-salvage rescue vessel.

At the 2003 Aloha Muscle Jam held yesterday in the Blaisdell Arena, Lori Sage competed in an endurance lifting competition against six male competitors. Lifting 25 pound barbells, she made 590 lifts.
