Kono wins stroke play championship

The Mid-Pacific Country Club certainly agrees with Stephanie Kono.

The incoming eighth-grader at Punahou School won her second tournament in four months at the Kailua course, running away with the Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship yesterday by 12 strokes.

The 13-year-old Kono carded a final-round 73 to finish at 4-under 212 for the 54-hole tournament. Defending champion Rachel Kyono (74), an incoming junior at Pepperdine, Kamehameha Schools Mari Chun (74) and former University of Hawaii golfer Desiree Ting (75) shared second at 224.

Kono, last year's runner-up, started the day with a 10-stroke lead. She was tied for the lead with Ting at 72 after the first round, but Kono was never threatened after her personal-best round of 67 on Wednesday.

In May, Kono won the 53rd Jennie K Wilson Invitational.

Arceneaux wins af2 award

Hawaiian Islanders quarterback Darnell Arceneaux was named the arenafootball2 Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Wichita Stealth on Aug. 1.

Arceneaux threw six touchdown passes and ran for two scores in the Islanders's 57-30 victory over the Stealth in the first round of the af2 playoffs. He completed 16 of 25 passes for 229 yards in the win.

The Islanders left for Oklahoma last night and will face the Tulsa Talons in a National Conference semifinal game tomorrow. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Hawaii time.

Cape Fear's Wilmont Perry was last week's Ironman of the Week and Mohegan's Charlie Cook was the ADT Defensive Player of the Week.
